There were limits to how freezing or overheated the two of us could make the room, but the two of us often had it set to 69 degrees even with incredibly hot and cold temperatures outside
College was a pretty crazy experience—between the long hours spent learning and the seemingly never ending get-togethers. It’s truly no wonder why I experienced massive sleep deprivation. But when you’re 19 and full of energy, it’s easier to subsist on only a few hours of sleep every night. I had a pretty abnormal eating schedule, and when I did get food, it involved subsisting on the greasy food being served by the campus cafeteria. I was tremendously lucky that I was placed with a roommate that had the same music and film interests as I did. We totally bonded over cranking up music over my stereo, or by playing Halo or GTA on his gaming machine. The two of us were harshly lucky as the two of us were actually placed in the newer housing, opposed to other students who had to stay in 40-year-old dorms. Our dorm had just been built, still smelled like paint, and had something that was not in any other dorms on our campus. What the two of us had was an entirely working temperature control component that the two of us had complete control over. There were limits to how freezing or overheated the two of us could make the room, but the two of us often had it set to 69 degrees even with incredibly hot and cold temperatures outside. I really appreciated having control over our indoor environment the way we did, especially since the dorms the two of us would transport into the following year had temperature control units that were totally locked and kept at 76 degrees regardless of the weather. It’s relatively easy to take little things like controllable Heating, Ventilation and A/C control units for granted. It’s absolutely silly to realize that they were giving free reign to a bunch of university freshmen when it came to running these newer A/C appliances.
