In the past year I’ve relocated from the midwest to a brand new environment and climate, and it’s taking some getting used to.
I was accustomed to seasonably variable weather, with wild fluctuations throughout the year that encompassed brutal cold, insane heat, and everything in between.
Nowadays I reside where it’s generally hot and humid for most of the year, with a winter foray into freezing temperatures for a brief period. I dealt with the extreme heat and mugginess over the summer, and only felt like I was finally getting used to the temperature right as the season slipped into autumn. Now that the temperature is dropping and the air is becoming crisp and cool, we have finally had to employ our furnace for the first time. We woke up one morning and found frost on the windows. The indoor air temperature was shockingly cold, and I actually went to check that the air conditioning unit wasn’t still engaged. I found that the temperature control system was powered off entirely, and realized it was finally time to run our central heating. I engaged the furnace and set the thermostat to a moderate temperature before going to stand next to the heater cabinet, waiting to hear the instrument power up. I was honestly worried that the heater wasn’t going to work properly, but received a pleasant surprise as the instrument immediately kicked into gear. I’m not thrilled at the decreasing outdoor air temperatures, but at least we know we can count on the central heating during our brief winter season.
